Unleash the Adventure

When the temperature rises, our furry friends feel the heat even more than we do. Unlike humans, dogs and many other pets can’t sweat effectively — making them vulnerable to heatstroke, dehydration, and burnt paws. And, every pet is an individual. I have three dogs, and they all deal with heat differently. Make sure you know your pets individual limits when you are out hiking, playing in the yard, or just enjoying a sunny day. It can mean the difference of a fun day of summer play, or an emergency visit to the animal hospital.

Check out these summer safety tips to help you keep your pet cool, comfortable, and safe.

1. Know the Signs of Overheating

Make sure to monitor your animals. Just like people, they don’t always act in their own best interest and seek shelter from the heat. Or if you have animals that normally live outside, make sure to check on them more often as the temperature rises. Watch for these signs of overheating;

  • Heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse.

  • Immediate action is crucial: move your pet to shade, offer water, and contact your vet

It’s always a good idea to keep a pet first aid kit around in case of emergencys. One I liked was this kit from ARCA. It includes an instant ice pack that can be used to help aid in overheating emergencies.

2. Keep Water Accessible at All Times

  • Add ice cubes for longer outings.

  • Carry a collapsible travel bowl or insulated water bottle for pets.
I like this one from the Guardians Store because it includes a 2-in-1 water and food container, along with collapsable water bowls for hiking or traveling.

3. Use Cooling Gear

  • Cooling vests, bandanas, and mats can keep your dog 5–10°F cooler.

  • Look for lightweight, breathable fabrics. This cooling vest from LucoLove is a great option that includes UV protection and an ice pack. Or, if you want more of a mat type of solution, try out this great one from the Cooler Dog store.

4. Time Your Walks

  • Early mornings or late evenings are safest.

  • Avoid midday heat, especially on pavement that can burn paws.

5. Protect Those Paws

  • If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for theirs.

  • Use dog booties or walk on grass/dirt trails.

6. Provide Shade During Outdoor Time

  • A pop-up pet canopy or shade tent makes a big difference during backyard fun or camping trips. Check out this great outdoor canopy from Heeyoo.

7. Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

  • Even with windows cracked, interior temps can rise dangerously in minutes.

Conclusion:
With a little planning, you can make sure your furry friend is protected from the heat and your pet can enjoy every summer adventure safely. Keep them hydrated, cool, and protected, and you’ll have many happy days ahead.
